MDRAI – Master in Design for Responsible AI

Better
Metaphors
of AI

About

A collaborative research project investigating Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a social construct shaped by metaphors, histories, narratives, and power relations. Through weekly tasks and guided sessions, participants examined how metaphors of AI influence perceptions of agency, knowledge, and possible futures.

Drawing from sociology, critical design, indigenous perspectives, anthropomorphism studies, and experiential futures, the project presents a critical analysis of dominant AI narratives while imagining alternative metaphors grounded in equity, ecology, and cultural plurality. Outcomes include speculative scenarios, essays, and a co-created guide to Better Metaphors of AI, encouraging more responsible and socially conscious ways of understanding, communicating, and designing AI systems.

Better Metaphors of AI is inspired by the following succesful initiatives and projects: Better Images of AI, AIMyths.org and  AI is Like… A Literature Review of AI Metaphors and Why They Matter for Policy.
